As a Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps member, you will have the incredible opportunity to support students’ academic and social-emotional development in local elementary and middle schools.
The Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps program is an engaging 10-month commitment in which AmeriCorps members impact Atlanta’s most vulnerable youth. Members provide math and literacy tutoring, emotional literacy support, curriculum enrichment, and community engagement to over 1,000 K-12th grade students attending mostly Title I schools across metro Atlanta. Members may also support Hands On Atlanta's Discovery Program, our long-standing enrichment program that occurs two Saturdays a month from October through April. Additionally, they assist with volunteer coordination during Hands On Atlanta’s signature events and annual days of service.
Long-term volunteerism is a great way to serve communities in need and commit to a service project that is important to you. There are plenty of programs offered in the U.S. and internationally. The primary long-term service programs are AmeriCorps, Teach for America (TFA), and Peace Corps.
- AmeriCorps is a volunteer service program that sends applicants on extended terms to areas of high need. While the Peace Corps operates internationally, applicants to AmeriCorps are placed in communities in the U.S. AmeriCorps sponsors a wide variety of service opportunities but focuses mostly on disaster services, economic opportunities, education, environmental services, and helping veterans & military families. Our program at Hands On Atlanta focuses on closing the education and opportunity gap here in metro Atlanta by providing hands-on math and literacy tutoring as well as social-emotional coaching.
- Although Teach For America is a member of AmeriCorps, it focuses solely on education as a community need. Unlike AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, it is not a volunteer program and participants are paid annual, full-time salaries. However, TFA is a bigger commitment with a two-year term compared to our ten-month term.
